Transport of goods and people by air and sea has increased enormously
over the past century. With the rise of intentional transport,
there has been an associated increase in the accidental movement
of plants, insects and other organisms. Frequently, these accidental
invaders go unnoticed because they fail to survive. Some, however,
have highly visible effects as they reproduce and spread into
a new region. In response to such unplanned arrivals, many countries
have developed quarantine regulations for incoming cargo with
specific inspections to detect and destroy unwanted organisms.
Budgets for quarantine services are not infinite, so inspections
are usually targeted towards known pests and diseases of economic
importance. Targets can be identified from previous knowledge
of the species in its native habitat or in regions it has invaded
already. But what if the new arrival is considered harmless
in its country of origin? When an organism enters a new environment,
the probability of successful invasion can be viewed from two
perspectives. Firstly, why is a particular community susceptible
to invasion? Secondly, why is a particular invader successful?
General predictions can be made about the probability of invasion
into ecological communities yet the outcome of a particular
invasion is not predictable. A unifying theory or model of invasion
biology that integrates factors affecting survival of the invader
and susceptibility of the community remains elusive. - University
